Qualcomm is preparing to release the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, a next-generation option to the Snapdragon 680 and Snapdragon 695. According to a substantial leak, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 is based on a 4 nm node and supports LPDDR5 RAM, USB 3.1 connectivity, a 48 MP primary camera and an FHD display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, among other features.
No Android OEM has taken advantage of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 yet, but Qualcomm has another mid-range chipset up its sleeve. Unsurprisingly, the company is gradually re-branding its entire product stack, with Evan Blass confirming that SM6450 will launch as the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1. Presumably replacing the likes of the Snapdragon 680 and the Snapdragon 695, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 utilises a 4 nm node, unlike its 6 nm-based predecessors. Unfortunately, the leaked specification sheet does not confirm how many CPU or GPU cores the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 has, although it outlines numerous other features.
On the one hand, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1’s CPU cores will operate at up to 2.2 GHz on a 64-bit architecture, matching the Snapdragon 695. Additionally, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 supports LPDDR5 RAM and USB 3.1 connectivity, both an uplift on older Snapdragon 6 chipsets. For reference, smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 could launch with up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM running at 2,750 MHz, a specification typically reserved for high-end smartphones.
Moreover, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 will be powerful enough to push an FHD display at 120 Hz, as well as triple 13 MP rear-facing cameras, a 25 MP and 16 MP dual camera setup or a single 48 MP camera. Furthermore, Qualcomm has integrated its X62 5G modem, plus WiFi 6E support courtesy of Qualcomm FastConnect 6700. Currently, it is unknown when Qualcomm will unveil the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1. To date, Qualcomm has confirmed that it will host this year’s Snapdragon Summit between November 15 and November 17, billed as ‘the biggest showcase of the year’. Expected to be the event where it introduces the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, we would not rule out an appearance for the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 either at this stage.
