New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) The government is exploring the possibility of bringing a single charger for electronic devices like smartphones and tablets and has also called a meeting of stakeholders next week to discuss the same.

Giving this information on Tuesday, a senior official of the Consumer Affairs Ministry said that the possibility of bringing a single charger to eliminate the need for different chargers for different electronic devices will be explored. He said that this would not only reduce the financial burden on the consumers but would also help in reducing e-waste.

According to the official, mobile phone makers and equipment makers have been called for a meeting on August 17 to explore the possibility of a ‘common charger’.

“If mobile companies can adopt a charging system in Europe and the US markets, why can’t they do so in India? Portable electronic devices like smartphones and tablets should have a common charger.

He said that if India does not push for such a change, then such equipment can be brought into India and dumped.

The European Union recently announced the implementation of a common charging standard for small electronic devices with USB-C ports by the year 2024. Such demand is also gaining momentum in America.

At present, at the time of purchase of any new smartphone or tablet, consumers also have to buy a separate charger. This is because the old charger may not work with the new device.
