Do your bit for the environment, and make some quick cash while you’re at it.

Are you thinking of getting rid of your old phone, and making a bit of cash while you’re at it?

Vodafone has launched a new online trade-in tool, which allows customers to organise cash for phones from the comfort of their homes.

Non-Vodafone customers can also trade in their phones, but will have to do so in-store.

The online trade-in is the first of its kind in the country, with up to €400 up for grabs for your phone. While up to €400 can be given to those who avail of the online tool, the average trade-in value for smartphones that have met the trade in criteria is €130.

The tool assesses the value of a phone through a series of device health checks, including cosmetic damage, touch sensitivity, screen condition, and rear camera capabilities.

Once these parameters have all been analysed, customers will receive a quote for the value of their phone.

Once the value has been received, you’ll receive a free postage label from Vodafone, and can drop your phone off at a DPD collection point.

The final payment for your phone is then sent directly into your bank account once the device passes final checks.

Trading in your phone while in-store will nab you some store credit, which can be used to buy new phones or accessories.

The terms can be seen in full here.

“Almost 5 million smartphones in Ireland that can be repurposed or recycled to help the planet,” said Anita Carra, Consumer Business Director at Vodafone Ireland.

“So we are delighted to launch trade-in online, which offers customers a quick and convenient way to trade in their smartphone.”

“This new offer ultimately extends the life of mobile devices, reduces waste and encourages Irish consumers to embrace a circular green economy”.

The move is part of Vodafone’s aim to be as green as possible, following the announcement that the company’s entire Irish operations were 100% powered by electricity from renewable sources.
